Lika Electronic further extends the range of fieldbus interfaces for its absolute encoders. The EM58 multiturn optical encoder is available now for the first time with Modbus RTU over RS-485 protocol interface and comes to complement the comprehensive line of all major fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks including EtherCAT, Profibus-DP, CANopen DS301 and DeviceNET.
Why choosing Modbus?
MODBUS RTU is a Master-Slave serial communication open protocol and a standard for device-to-device communication. It is among the most popular industrial protocols being used today, especially in the Asiatic market and largely widespread amongst automation systems and process control and measurement applications because of its simplicity, reliability and flexibility (for example, it can run over virtually all communication media, from wireless to fiber optics). Furthermore it can be integrated fairly easily and inexpensively in both new and old plants. Among the reasons behind such large implementation and diffusion are: - Modbus bases on RS-485/RS-232 serial communication which is well established and universally supported; - it is basic yet complete, flexible and most of all reliable; - it is really simple to implement and easy-to-use; - it is significantly more inexpensive to deploy than other industrial fieldbus protocols and requires less resources; - it is open and can be used royalty-free.
Why choosing EM58 Modbus encoder?
EM58 Modbus encoder implements basic functions such as position, preset, counting direction and serial port configuration values as well as extended features such as scaling (counts per revolution, overall counts), watch dog and extensive diagnostics (wrong parameters, flash memory error, ...). Parameters can be easily set either by using the software tool supplied for free or directly by means of a PLC or a supervision computer in compliance with “Modbus over Serial Line” protocol. EM58 encoder further boasts a large number of key features offered at no charge. Among the others: LEDs meant to show visually the operating or fault status of the interface and the device; DIP switches to set the node ID, the baud rate and the termination resistance; boot-loader feature to upgrade the firmware and add new functionalities during the lifetime of the product; software tool to configure and test manually the unit.
EM58 features a 26-bit multi-turn overall resolution (12-bit single-turn + 14-bit multi-turn) and is offered in both M12 and cable output versions.
It comes in a standard 58-mm diameter flange in both hollow (Ø 14, 15 mm) and solid (Ø 6, 8, 9.52, 10, 11, 12 mm) shafts. Several mounting configurations are available allowing for quick, safe and low-cost installation in your any applications. Capable of 9.000 RPM in continuous operation and working temperatures between -25 and +85 °C EM58 provides IP67-rated protection (IP65 at shaft side).
EM58 Modbus encoder finally allows direct connection to PLCs and controllers in your Modbus network and helps to reduce costs by making it unnecessary to use expensive communication modules, gateways and converters.
